There are very few cities where you can have a completely normal Tuesday and somehow end the night sitting inside a gorgeous theater watching a Broadway show. You can answer emails, go to the gym, grab a coffee, complain about the subway, make dinner plans—and then, a few hours later, you’re sitting in the dark while a full orchestra starts playing and someone steps onto a stage in a costume that probably cost more than your rent. It is one of the most underrated luxuries of living in New York.
And Broadway Week is basically an excuse to lean into it.
Fall 2026 Broadway Week runs from September 8 through September 20, with 2-for-1 tickets available for 25 participating shows. Which means this is the perfect moment to stop treating Broadway like something reserved for birthdays, visiting parents, or out-of-town friends and start treating it like a very good weeknight activity.
Because honestly, there is something so fun about getting slightly dressed up after a completely ordinary day and heading toward Times Square knowing that, for the next few hours, you get to disappear into another world. Here are five shows worth putting on the calendar.
Wicked
If there is ever a time to finally see Wicked, it is Broadway Week. The show is one of those pieces of New York culture that feels almost impossible to explain until you actually sit in the theater and hear that first big musical number. The story of Elphaba and Glinda has everything: friendship, ambition, romance, betrayal, incredible costumes and the kind of songs you will inevitably find yourself singing on the walk home. It is classic Broadway in the best possible way—big, sparkly and completely committed to the fantasy.
The Outsiders
For something a little moodier, The Outsiders is the pick. Based on S. E. Hinton’s beloved coming-of-age novel, the musical brings the Greasers and Socs to the stage with a surprisingly cinematic feel. It is emotional without being overly polished, and the choreography is a major reason to see it live. This is the show for the person who wants their Broadway night to feel a little more dramatic and a little less princess-y—in a very good way. It is also exactly the kind of show that makes you remember why live theater hits differently from watching something on a screen.
Stranger Things: The First Shadow
For the ultimate New York night-out experience, Stranger Things: The First Shadow is hard to beat. You don’t just go to see this one—you go to be transported. The production brings the world of Hawkins to Broadway with elaborate theatrical effects and a story that expands the Stranger Things universe. Even if you aren’t the biggest theater person, this is a particularly fun choice because it feels like an event. Think less “quiet night at the theater” and more “what exactly did we just watch?”
Oh, Mary!
Then there is Oh, Mary!, for when the goal is simply to have the most fun possible. The wildly irreverent comedy puts Mary Todd Lincoln at the center of a completely unhinged historical fantasy, and it has become one of those shows people leave wanting to immediately talk about. It is campy, ridiculous and very New York in its willingness to commit fully to the bit. If a Broadway musical feels like too much of a production for a casual weeknight, this is a great reminder that Broadway can also just be extremely, extremely funny.
Six
And finally: Six. If the idea of sitting through a traditional three-hour musical sounds exhausting, Six is your girl. The show reimagines the six wives of Henry VIII as a pop concert, giving each queen her own moment in the spotlight. It is energetic, empowering and very easy to get swept up in. The whole thing feels like the world’s most elaborate girls’ night out, which makes it particularly perfect for Broadway Week.
The best part of Broadway Week, though, might not actually be the discount. It is the reminder that Broadway is just there. There is something kind of magical about being a New Yorker and realizing that you can have a normal day and then, without getting on a plane or planning a huge weekend away, find yourself sitting in a theater watching one of the world’s best live performances.
So wear the cute outfit. Get a drink beforehand. Walk through Times Square with everyone else. Let yourself be a tourist in your own city for a few hours.
