I hate the term “hidden gem”. It feels touristy. Most places labeled that are anything but hidden (I once saw Erewhon Venice called one). Still, every now and then I’ll use it if a spot is truly tucked away and too good of a post to flop on social. I’m no better than the rest… which brings me to my:
Top 3 Actual Hidden Gems in Los Angeles
A small door off Melrose with just a plaque marks the entrance. Ring the bell, and someone lets you into this art gallery dedicated to 20th-century deco, postmodern, and contemporary design. Each staged room is shoppable, and the house itself is an understated piece of Gehry architecture. The light bounces across walls and furniture in a way that makes the whole space feel alive.
A daytime café inside Dudley Market, closed on Google Maps but open if you just show up. They serve coffee like cocktails: mochas rimmed with orange zest, salt, and dark chocolate shavings. The drinks are some of the best in LA, but the service is unapologetically brusque. Think NY-style hospitality: not my cup of tea, but luckily we’re there for coffee.
A vintage showroom you can only enter by reserving (and paying) online. Inside: endless racks of vintage designer pieces, walls lined with Dior Saddles, and treasures waiting to be sorted through.
