How many times have you been in a conversation with Friends and someone brings up Sex and the City? And the next line is always, “omg which character are we?!”.

“You’re soooo Samantha. I feel like I’m Charlotte?!” God forbid anyone ever picks Miranda.

Then they turn to you, “who do you think you are?”. I roll my eyes a bit, not out of annoyance but because I have this part rehearsed:

Well, I’m all of them. And so are you. My theory is that Carrie, as the main character, is actually a perfectly curated blend of Miranda, Charlotte, and Samantha. That’s why we all relate to her the most. Sure, we aspire to be a Charlotte at times, and Samantha at others (justice for Miranda), but at our core we’re all Carrie.

The 3 girls are extremes. Charlotte: soft, sweet, and a little naive. Samantha: wildly outspoken, successful, and, well, a nympho. And Miranda: sharp, grounded, and hyper-competent. Carrie (you and I) sit somewhere right in the messy middle.

And even though I’m sick of having this conversation, I wrote in my notes app, this week’s newsletter topic: SATC theory [LA ed.]. So, here it is:

Charlotte is, of course, Brentwood: classic, traditional, and probably right-leaning.

Samantha… if she were gay, West Hollywood. I’ll put her in the Hills.

Miranda is Century City: career-minded, structured, and slightly boring.

And Carrie? She’s wherever you are!
